China-Lead ISO 5872:2025 Released – Unifying Global Oil & Gas Pipeline Terminology

The international standard Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries (Including Low-Carbon Energy) - Pipeline Transportation Systems - Terminology (ISO 5872:2025), led by China, has recently been officially released and implemented.
Based on China's national standards, this standard has unified 287 terms for oil and gas pipeline transportation internationally for the first time, achieving "one term, one definition, and global consistency in meaning and interpretation".
The development of the standard took five years. China took the lead in forming an international working group composed of 38 experts from 13 countries, organized 21 technical seminars with domestic and foreign experts, and completed 25 rounds of text iterations. Its release and implementation will reduce communication costs and technical barriers in the international oil and gas pipeline industry, support the interconnection of cross-border energy infrastructure, and promote the safety of energy trade and the integrated development of regional economies.
